Horror fans will enjoy our review of Monster House (2006), where we cover its story, scares, and how it ranks among modern horror classics.

Monster House (2006) is a family-friendly horror movie that is a must-see for my family every Halloween. It never gets boring, old, or dull. Gil Kenan (City of Ember (2008), Poltergeist (2015), Five Nights at Freddy’s) directed the animated film on an estimated $75 million budget.

Monster House is about two boys nearing their final Halloween Trick R Treat because they are becoming too old to participate. This film becomes their final adventure into the last remnants of scariness. DJ (Mitchel Musso) and Chowder (Sam Lerner) are accompanied by the smart girl scout Jenny (Spencer Locke) as they uncover a neighborhood mystery and haunting. Old man Nebbercracker (Steve Buscemi) falls into unforeseen circumstances, and while he is away, his house comes to life and starts doing terrible things to the kids who come near the house. DJ, Chowder, and Jenny try to solve the mystery of the house haunting and stop the haunting altogether.

I love the animation and the tone of this film. It beautifully held every member of my family glued to the screen. The story plays on the fact that each neighborhood has its own ghost stories and the what-if factor. The animation was all done via motion capture, giving the voices and the movements the bonus to make a lasting impression on the viewer. The story is simple but told in such a way that you are constantly waiting to see what gets thrown at the kids next and how they tackle each situation. As I said, it is a highly recommended Halloween movie for kids that will quickly become a favorite for you and your family.

Fun Fact: Kathleen Turner played Constance, Nebbercracker’s wife. Turner also played the voice of Roger Rabbit’s Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).
