Exploring Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) through our review, we cover its story, scares, and how it fits into the broader horror genre landscape.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) is an American action adventure fantasy film that is the fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and is an isolated sequel to the previous installments. This movie is the first movie in the franchise that is not directed by Gore Verbinski. On Stranger Tides had an estimated budget of $378.5 million and grossed over $1.046 billion at the box offices. The movie was also the 19th highest-grossing film of all time worldwide (not adjusting for inflation), 16th highest-grossing film worldwide, 3rd highest-grossing film in 2011, is the 2nd successful installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise/series and is the 4th highest-grossing Disney feature. Director Rob Marshall (Chicago (2002), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Into the Woods (2014)) did an excellent job executing his first Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) revolves around Captain Jack Sparrow and Angelica (Penelope Cruz) searching for the Fountain of Youth with obstacles, pirate Blackbeard in their way. The movie starts by showing us Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp - Edward Scissorhands (1990), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)) with King George II. King George wants Jack to find the Fountain of Youth before the Spanish Navy, and King Ferdinand discovers it. Jack did not take the deal and escaped only to be warned by his father, Captain Teague (Keith Richards - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), The Departed (2006), Goodfellas (1990), V for Vendetta (2005)) about the Fountain’s rituals.
Jack found out that someone is recruiting people to form a crew to search for the fountain and is impersonating him to do so. He also learned that it is no other than his former lover Angelica (Penelope Cruz - Vanilla Sky (2001), Volver (2006), Blow (2001)) who is also assumed to be the daughter of the pirate Blackbeard. Blackbeard (Ian McShane - Kung Fu Panda (2008), Lovejoy (1986), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)) practices voodoo magic and has a magical sword that can control his ship. The movie progresses to being a thrilling adventure that kept me on my toes as their action-packed expedition continues with betrayal and other things. Fans and non-fans should not miss this movie as it is truly fascinating with excellent cinematography, special effects, and phenomenal performances from the actors. I gave this film an eight because it was a little frustrating to watch with the sketchy dialogue/screenplay - could have been better. Everything else in the movie was almost flawless.
