This in-depth review of Red Dragon (2002) explores its story, characters, and scares in detail, offering insights for every horror fan.

Brett Ratner directed Red Dragon (2002) off the novel by Thomas Harris winning 4 movie awards and was nominated for 10 more. Red Dragon has a huge $78 million estimated movie budget which took in $93.1 million at the US box office.

Red Dragon stars Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Edward Norton as the Ex-FBI agent Will Graham. Dr. Hannibal Lecter helps Will Graham track down a new serial killer going by as the Tooth Fairy (Ralph Fiennes).

The cast of Red Dragon is amazing and features many top-shelf actors. The screenplay writer Ted Tally shows that he tried to stay as close to the source material as possible for this prequel to The Silence of the Lambs film.

Dr. Lecture plays his usual slick as a snake role with Graham but never quite reached the level portrayed in The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Red Dragon plays more like a detective story than the riveting crime chase of cat and mouse it should have been. The scene where Lecter’s cell is searched for signs and clues as to how he is communicating with the Tooth Fairy aka Francis Dolarhyde is a great movie scene.

Red Dragon is one of those films where you will either love it or hate it. I stand a little more towards the side of liking but still not loving Red Dragon.
