Odd Thomas Review

In a California desert town, a short-order cook with clairvoyant abilities encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark, threatening forces.

Odd Thomas (2013) was a nice late night movie (10 pm) to watch before bed on Netflix. It was a bit slow for me, but I enjoyed the story line. I gave this movie a 6 because it was pretty entertaining and kept me up because I wanted to see what happened in the end. I will watch this movie again with my family (including kids).

The Odd Thomas movie is based on Dean Koontz‘s novel Odd Thomas. Director, writer and co-producer Stephen Sommers (When Worlds Collide, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Van Helsing) executed the movie well. Odd Thomas contains humor, suspense, violence and little amount of gore. It grossed me out during the last 20 minutes of the movie when Odd opened Fungus Bob Robertson (Shuler Hensley - The Legend of Zorro, Cruiser, After.Life) refrigerator and freezer and saw what he saw.

Odd Thomas (Anton Yelchin - Fright Night Remake, Burying the Ex, Cymbeline) is a fast food cook and a clairvoyant who see’s and talks to dead people. He also knows when death is coming close to certain people because he sees metallic silver ghostly bodachs. Bodachs are scary figures that follows people around and feeds off of the pain of people who are about to die. Odd Thomas cannot lead a normal life with his girlfriend Stormy Llewellyn (Addison Timlin - The Town That Dreaded Sundown, Fallen, You Were Once Called Queen City) because he is busy trying to save people/ the world.

Odd Thomas had a bad feeling when Fungus Bob walked into his diner and was surrounded by a whole bunch of bodachs. He knew death was near for many people, but he was not sure of who those people were. Odd Thomas then had a dream where many people died at the same time and his co-worker had a similar dream, as well. Odd and Stormy tried to solve the case with the help of Chief Wyatt Porter (Willem Dafoe - Pasolini, The Fault in Our Stars, Nymphomaniac: Vol. I). Odd and Stormy discovers that Fungus Bob worships the Prince of Darkness (P.O.D) and the bodachs were distracting him (Odd). Odd recalled a tattoo on one of the officers arm and figures out that Fungus Bob had more members in the P.O.D group.

The last five minutes of this movie was truly sad and got me teary. Will Odd Thomas save all the people that are in danger? Watch and see.

Why the 6 rating? Odd Thomas was watchable but did not have a wow factor nor did I become overly excited with the story line/characters. Every time I saw Willem Dafoe while he was home, he was getting busy with his wife in a subtle way, funny. Great movie to watch late night before you go to bed and like I said before, currently available on Netflix streaming. The director did try to add some depth to the villains by constantly revealing another missing element then playing it out through the mind of Odd Thomas, I just could not get excited over this mild horror movie.
