The Confines Review

Take a terrifying plunge into the warped mind of a disturbed young woman. Desperate to get her life back on track...

The Confines (2015), aka The Abandoned (2015), is an American psychological mystery thriller horror movie that had a very little cast. Co-writer, producer and director Eytan Rockaway did a great job directing his first full-length movie. The Confines was a creepy tale to watch with lots of suspense, violence, sitting on the edge of your seat moments and thrills. The director did a great job making me think that something is going to happen, and that feeling grew as the movie continues.

The Confines revolves around Streak (Louisa Krause - Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), Young Adult (2011), King Kelly (2012), Bluebird (2013)) who wants to change her life. Streak is on anti-psychotic medication and is trying to change her life so that she can keep custody of her daughter. She got a job as a security guard in an abandoned building and has to watch the cameras with a live feed of the building. The con of the job is that it is a nighttime position. Streak and her co-worker Cooper (Jason Patric - The Lost Boys (1987), In the Valley of Elah (2007), Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997), Narc (2002)) had an eventful first night at the job. Steak found that she has to make things run smoothly at the abandoned building, but it is about to be the opposite. She found out that there is a hidden basement with huge secrets that will change her life forever.

Streak being herself and cannot help it, starts prying around and became more and more curious until she wishes that she had never started prying around in the first place. Cooper just wants to be finished with the night as he is the one that thinks straight and does not go with the flow. A person’s imagination can be a scary thing at midnight. Is Streak actually experiencing all of the dreadful experiences she is going through or is it her imagination? If it is her imaginations then how is Cooper…?

I applaud the director for putting in clues in the movie as to what the movie is about - one of the clues is a poster that Streak was looking at. The poster has a nude woman with a caption that says: "en coma de passe." The words basically relate to the movie. The movie was everything I expected it to be, entertaining, horrifying deformed characters, creepy, intense and intriguing. I enjoyed seeing how the characters evolved and learned about why they both need their jobs; it was kind of emotional. The actors did a phenomenal job with their roles. The con is that the movie reminds me of The Shining (1980), The Cell (2000) and a few other movies because some of the parts appeared to be taken from those movies. I was thinking and thought, what movie is original today? There are too many movies for a writer to write a screenplay that is 100 percent different from other movies. Overall, I enjoyed the movie and recommended it to all horror fans.
