Dark Was the Night Review

An evil is unleashed in a small town when a logging company sets up shop in the neighboring woods.

Dark Was the Night (2014) was an American drama thriller horror movie that was filmed in Southampton, Long Island, New York, USA. Director Jack Heller (Enter Nowhere (2011)) did a phenomenal job giving us creepy hints and executing his second movie. He had talent but needed more directorial skills to execute this screenplay. This film would be off the charts if there were a remake with a bigger budget, great special effects, great cinematography and Kevin Durand in it.

Dark Was The Night open up with a spectacular scene that made me know that I was in for a treat. Sheriff Paul Shields (Kevin Durand - X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Real Steel (2011), I Am Number Four (2011), Fruitvale Station (2013)) marriage is at a crisis in the town of Maiden Woods. His marriage is failing because he constantly blames himself for his youngest child’s death. Paul’s wife Susan (Bianca Kajlich - Rules of Engagement (2007), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), 30 Minutes or Less (2011), Bring It On (2000)) has forgiven Paul for the accident that lead to their son’s death. There is something in the woods that is wreaking havoc on the small town by taking their cattle, leaves hoof prints in the dirt, leaving scratch marks on metals and… watch the movie to see the other things happening. The people in the town are too terrified to do anything about it and does not want to mess with the legends. Will Paul stop blaming himself for the death of his son and save his marriage? Will Paul be able to save his little town from the creatures that lurk in the woods? What creature is rampaging through the forest killing everything in its path?

Kevin Durand was astounding with his great convincing performance as Paul. Kevin Durand also stars in FX horror TV series The Strain. The gloomy atmosphere sets you up for the jump scares and tense moments in the film. The movie started off superb but lost it towards the ending. I dislike that we only got to see the creature (fully shown) towards the end of the movie. There were backgrounds to the characters that made it easy for me to connect with them and gave them a sense of place in the film. I would see this movie again and recommend it to all horror fans.
