Whispers Review

A young couple grieving the recent death of their daughter move to the countryside where they are haunted by their tragedy and a sinister darkness.

Whispers (2015) is a 1h 30 min UK English drama thriller horror movie that was shot in Chulmleigh Village, Devon, England, UK and South Devon, England, UK. Director, writer, and producer Tammi Sutton (Killjoy 2: Deliverance from Evil (2002), Z’amour (2013), Isle of Dogs (2011)) paves the way for UK films and sets the expectation high as her film delivers everything horror fans have been looking for. Whispers grabbed my attention and received my undivided attention within the first five minutes. Horror fans should watch this melancholy, suspenseful and tension-filled mystery horror movie as soon as they can.

Catherine Caldwell had a terrible childhood that was plagued with tragedies that left her with emotional scars because she saw her friend die and was haunted by apparitions. Catherine (Keeley Hazell - Like Crazy (2011), Cashback (2006), Horrible Bosses 2 (2014)) is now an adult and is trying her very best to get over her daughter’s death. Catherine and her husband Harvey try to move forward after their daughter Lilly (Leyla Gellan) died. Harvey (Craig Rees - Violence (2015), Sutures (2009)) and Catherine began having conflicts and had attended marriage counseling according to flashbacks we see. The couple decides to go on a retreat but that does not solve their problem as they appear to have a bigger problem on hand and it is a paranormal problem.

Actors Keeley Hazell and Craig Rees gave us amazing performances portraying a couple which was realistic and believable. Keeley Hazell plays Catherine who is grieving and worn out emotionally.

The set and tragic storyline intertwined so seamlessly with the supernatural elements, but the frosting on the cake was the surprise ending that I did not see coming. I would recommend all horror fans to watch this film as soon as possible because it was an excellent watch with an unnerving dark mood throughout the movie that will surely get under many viewers skin. Whispers stand out from other films of its genre because it carries a certain professionalism around it with a suspenseful storyline. The cinematography could not have been any better, and the sets/location did justice to the movie. It was unbelievably good and creepy watching the paranormal phenomenon taking place. The special effects were awesomely done, and I could have been any more pleased with this supernatural power movie that appeared to take elements from psychological Dark Water (2005) but manages to excel.
