I recently streamed SAGA: Curse of the Shadow (2013) on Netflix which is titled ‘Curse of the Dragon Slayer’ instead. I saw this trailer a while ago and remembered the captivating trailer when I saw the movie title and poster on Netflix. I know this film was not made on a huge budget but that does not stop the special effects, CGI, cast and director John Lyde from trying to bring as much quality to the camera as possible. The film has some really good characters whose performances are good and the costumes / make-up look terrific on the characters.
Elf Nemyt Akaia (Danielle Chuchran - Haunt (2013), Storm Rider (2013), Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat (2003)) plays a deadly anti-hero who is thrown into a bigger plot because of the curse that is put on her after killing a member of the Shadow army. Nemyt turns in her bounty but when the clerics discover the ‘curse mark’ on her wrist, they immediately accuse her of working with the Shadow, throwing her in jail. In jail, she meets another elf who tells her the plans for the Shadow lord’s resurrection but Nemyt kills him when he discovers that she is not brainwashed by the Shadow curse yet. This is where Keltis the Wanderer (Richard McWilliams - Dawn of the Dragonslayer (2011)) who is a Paladin type character meets her and frees her to help his cause to stop the Shadow lord. Later on we meet a very interesting and important character, Kullimon the Black (Paul D. Hunt - Osombie (2012)) who is a Master Orc and totally awesome. I really liked the three main stars but really got attached to Kullimon the Black because he had a terrific make-up job that looked so realistic.
I totally liked the movie and I am happy that the movie lived up to my expectations. The story is simple but well done, the scenery is great and the cinematography is better than most big budget films. I really recommend this movie to anyone but look out for the beginning which starts off a little slow. I was however disappointed with the ending, the main villain looked horrible but that is because of the low budget but everything else makes up for it in the end. I really felt like I was watching a ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie with the character designs and the overall feel I felt, not as good but close enough to really enjoy the film.
