Secret Window (2004) is one of those Stephen King based movies that are transitioned well from book to movie. The flaw is that this is supposed to be a mystery thriller but you end up watching Depp because he is fun to watch. Screenplay credit and director David Koepp spent an estimated $40 million dollars on this film which only opened to $18 million at the box office.
Johnny Depp plays writer Mort Rainey who is trying to write in his lakeside cabin after catching his wife Amy (Maria Bello - Prisoners (2013), A History of Violence (2005), Payback (1999)) and Ted Milner (Timothy Hutton) in a motel six months prior. A mysterious John Shooter (John Turturro - Transformers (2007)) shows up claiming that Rainey plagiarized his life. The crimes are real, and now there is both legal retribution to pay and the killer wants his dues.
The Secret Window story sets you up thinking one thing but thanks to Stephen King, drops you in an entirely different zone. The characters are well set up. I also loved how the story unfolds carefully while keeping you guessing every step of the way. I will recommend this to anyone. I was originally not too fond of its slow movie elements but give it time. The ending is something that you will most likely figure out but will be engrossed in the story/performances nevertheless.
