Exploring Silent Hill (2006) through our review, we cover its story, scares, and how it fits into the broader horror genre landscape.
Christophe Gans directed a fairly decent movie adaptation of the popular Silent Hill universe with Silent Hill (2006). So good a job, the film was nominated for eight awards. However, this movie did not do too well at the US box office only bringing in a little under $47 million on an estimated movie budget of $50 million.
Silent Hill is based on the best-selling horror action game, Silent Hill. This movie stars Radha Mitchell (Man on Fire (2004)) as Rose, a desperate mother who takes her adopted daughter, Sharon (Jodelle Ferland), to the town of Silent Hill in an attempt to cure her of her ailment. After a violent car crash, Sharon disappears, and Rose begins her desperate search to get her back from the Silent Hill Nightmares. She descends into a fog of smoldering ash and into the center of the twisted reality of the town of Silent Hill and its terrible secret. Pursued by grotesquely deformed creatures and the people of a town stuck in permanent purgatory, Rose begins to uncover the truth behind the apocalyptic disaster that burned the town 30 years back in the haunted town of Silent Hill. Dare to step inside the horrific town of Silent Hill, where darkness preys on every soul, and Hell’s creations await around every corner. But know that once you enter there is no turning back.
The performance of Radha Mitchell is amazing; she nails the role. All the cast members deliver terrific performances. I remember watching Mitchell walking to the town and all the mist surrounding her, the perspective of the camera, I was immediately taken back to when I first started playing Silent Hill. The special effects are great, and I love how the mood and tone of the game were captured. This film is slow at times and that is on purpose to match the source material. I immediately watched the film over again right after watching it the first time. Right now, you can stream Silent Hill on Crackle streaming service for free.
