HellHorror’s review of Spectral (2016) breaks down the plot, scares, cast performances, and its lasting impact on the horror genre.
Spectral (2016) is a PG-13 1h 47 min American military science fiction action thriller that was shot in Budapest, Hungary; Komarno, Slovakia; Korda Studios, Etyek, Hungary and Origo Studios, Budapest, Hungary. Director and co-writer Nic Mathieu did a brilliant job executing a sharply-shot thrilling action film that had enough originality to keep us going. The intense sequences was well received along with
Clyne (James Badge Dale - The Departed (2006), World War Z (2013), Iron Man 3 (2013), Shame (2011)) is a scientist that was brought in by the military to explain the previous events. The event was that a soldier was cut off from his team, and his goggles that were created by Clyne reveal a shape, but the shape killed him before he can identify what the shape was. The soldier was burned on the outside but frozen solid on the inside so the military hopes that Clyne can help to figure out why that happened.
Captain Sessions (Max Martini - 13 Hours (2016), Captain Phillips (2013), Pacific Rim (2013), The Unit (2006-2009)) heads to the site where the soldier died and discovered that the shape was actually a human and there were hundreds of them. The ghostly forms are invisible to the naked eye, and those who dare to confront them will face death. The residents believed that the ghostly shapes are spirits from a war and other think they are from the Moldova government.
What happens next is for you to discover as it was a fantastic action flick with a little horror.
Spectral paid more attention to the action than the science fiction and horror aspect of the film but it all blended well to give us an entertaining fueled movie with strong CG and solid combat sequences. I like the effects on the specters as they appear as ghostly forms and not as smoky as they first appear. The acting was good as well as the sets, sound, special effects, lighting, and cinematography.
