Back in the 60’s pop icon Spider-man was introduced to the world. This phenomenon has reached every possible thing you can think of from comics to toys, T.V. shows, and video games. The only thing he hadn’t conquered was his movie. Held in development hell for years our favorite web slinger has finally hit the big screen with an amazing entrance.
The movie starts out with the nerdy Peter Parker who is pushed around by everyone and is madly in love with the girl of his dreams, his next door neighbor Mary Jane Watson. After accidentally being bit by a genetically enhanced spider, Peter gains incredible abilities which make him the Spider-man we all know today. After letting a criminal go that turned into the killer of his uncle Ben peter decides to become Spider-man and become a hero. The worst of his problems come to light as the Green Goblin terrorizes the city but on top of it, he has person problems as Peter to deal with.
Spider-man was unique. It had many issues to overcome but still managed to entertain. I always thought Spider-man would make a great movie because although he is a superhero like any other, there are many problems that we all face in life he also has to deal with. It was easy to sympathize with him. This was one of the most important parts that I was glad to see accomplished. It was very emotional when Uncle Ben was killed, and Spider-man goes out to avenge him, and you witness him learning how to swing around for the first time.
Every aspect of this movie was exceptional, but I can’t say the same for the green goblin. Don’t get me wrong Willem Dafoe played the part perfectly, but the costume was just not working for me. There was no resemblance to the original green goblin from the comics at all. He looked more like a cyborg than a goblin. It was just horrendous, and I couldn’t stand it.
Spider-man was a great film and a perfect example of how a comic book can make its transition from comic to movie. Not the best ever but definitely worth recognition.
