Starry Eyes (2014) is an American horror movie that was better than I thought it would be. Directors and writers Kevin Kolsch (Absence (2009), Postcards from the Future: The Chuck Palahniuk Documentary (2003), Ext. Life (2010)) and Dennis Widmyer (Curtain (2011), Absence (2009), Throwaway (2008)) worked well together. Kevin and Dennis shine although they do not have much experience in the movie industry. Starry Eyes contains nudity, extreme violence, gore galore, drug use, bad language, twists, suspense, frightening scenes and fear of what will happen.
Starry Eyes is about fame and how certain people do whatever it takes to obtain that fame. Sarah (Alex Essoe - Free to Go (2008), Passion Play (2010), F*ckdrive (2008)) is an unemployed actor that shares an apartment with other unemployed actors. She works in a restaurant to pay her bills and does not fancy it much because she thinks it is beneath her. She looks down on Indie film offers. Upon looking for acting gigs, Sarah came across a role for a movie called The Silver Scream and went in for an audition. Sarah did not get the audition and was distraught in the lady’s’ room throwing a tantrum/fit. One of the audition people saw her in the lady’s’ room and asked her to audition again and perform her tantrum in the audition. She soon receives a call back and met the movie’s producers who is filthy rich and wants something in return for Sarah to have a part. Sarah could achieve her dream of starring in a big movie, but she has to make a troubling decision of how far she will go and what she will do to obtain her movie role.
The movie makes me think what would a person do to be a star? What will a person do to make their dreams come true and be recognized? This movie will definitely be on the top horror movie list for 2014. One again I love the directing skills - it made me feel as though I was right there with Sarah and empathized with her. The sets were awesomely terrifying and marvelously done. This is a horror movie that you might want to have an empty stomach for because it is pretty grotesque. It made my stomach churn and winched.
