Stir of Echoes: The Homecoming (2007) is an American television thriller horror film that was filmed in Stouffville, Ontario, Canada and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ernie Barbarash (Cube Zero (2004), Assassination Games (2011), 6 Bullets (2012), They Wait (2007)) should have stuck to directing instead of being the writer and director of this film. The movie was good/average but could have been something better. The film contains strong violence, disturbing images, bad language, ghost, fire, a war veteran, murder, hospital, guilt, flashback, clairvoyant, burn victims, and a sad story.
Ted Cogan (Rob Lowe - The West Wing (1999), Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), Wayne’s World (1992), Parks and Recreation (2009)) is a United States National Guard captain that is stationed in Iraq. Ted orders his men to fire a warning shot at a van that did not obey their command for them to stop their vehicle but Ted’s men shot several shots at the vehicle instead of one. An Iraqi girl escapes the van moments before the full van engulfed in flames. Ted was heartbroken after he found that an innocent family was killed because his men did not obey his command. Ted tries his best to save the girl but in the midst of it, his unit was under attack leading him to soon after being in a coma. Ted awoke about two weeks later from his coma and returned home to Chicago where he is now haunted by ghosts, guilt of the innocent family dying, premonitions, and heartache. He is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and his wife Molly (Marnie McPhail - The Edison Twins (1982), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005), Sugar (2004)) and teenage son Max is trying to help him.
Ted seeks medical help but the government declines to help him, and he is not financially stable to do so by himself, so he did the next best thing. He asked psychic Jake Witzky (Zachary Bennett) to help him. Jake told Ted that he has to ask the spirits what they want, but it did not take long for Ted to see what the spirits/ghosts want. His son Max (Ben Lewis - Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), The Shrine (2010), The Russell Girl (2008)), his girlfriend Sammi (Tatiana Maslany) and their friend Luke (Shawn Roberts) were involved in a fatal car accident. Max was injured and was the only survivor resulting in Ted understanding that the ghost is tormented and seeks justice. The ghost haunting him is an Arab-American college student named Farzan (Vik Sahay - Good Will Hunting (1997), Chuck (2007), eXistenZ (1999), American Reunion (2012)) who was set on fire after being beaten severely. Ted was shocked out of his mind to discover who the ghost was and decides against everyone’s wishes to help Farzan. Ted did something that most fathers would not do, but it is the right thing to do.
It was sad to see this film as the screenplay was sad but enlightening and shows us how kids can think when they lose a parent. These teenagers were heartbroken after losing two of their parents in Iraq and one of their parents being injured while serving in Iraq. They were so disturbed that they began hating/disliking people from Iraq so they acted out of anger and did something that no one should do. I gave this movie a five because the actors did a fantastic job with their performances. The special effects were done nicely, and the makeup department did a good job. As sad as the movie is - it is what is happening in the world today everyone race hates another, resulting in numerous violence. I was sad while writing this review because no family should have to go through what these families endure.
