HellHorror’s review of Submerged (2015) breaks down the plot, scares, cast performances, and its lasting impact on the horror genre.

Submerged (2015) is an American drama thriller film that exceeds my expectations. Director Steven C. Miller (Extraction (2015), Automaton Transfusion (2006), The Aggression Scale (2012), and Silent Night (2012)) did an average job executing this movie. Steven, however, failed at not taking full advantage of the claustrophobic underwater scenes - why did Matt not take charge and use some of the knowledge he gained in the Army? I was amused to see the director made Matt into a guy that sits in his seat (although his leg was impaled by something) reflecting on his life and what got him to the point he is in right now - army guy - save the group!!!

Submerged revolves around Matt (Jonathan Bennett - Mean Girls (2004), Van Wilder: Freshman Year (2009), Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005), Love Wrecked (2005)), who was a former Army Ranger and is now a private driver. Matt’s boss is businessman Hank (Tim Daly - Wings (1990), Private Practice (2007), Superman (1996), My Neighbor Totoro (1988)). Hank tells Matt that he has to drive his daughter Jessie (Talulah Riley - Pride & Prejudice (2005), Inception (2010), St. Trinian’s (2007), Thor: The Dark World (2013)) around until she returns to NYU. Jessie is attending NYU College and is home during her break, so Matt has to drive her and her friends around, even when intoxicated. A few kidnappers plan on kidnapping Jessie to get revenge on Hank. Matt tried his best to save Jessie from the goons as they pursued him in a high-speed chase but could not help from crashing into a lake after swerving off a bridge. The group tries to escape the vehicle as the oxygen runs out under the water. What happens next is not too exciting except for the movie’s ending.

I was secretly hoping that Jessie’s friends, who are so obnoxious, would be killed off-screen within ten minutes of seeing them, and I am not that type of person. If Jessie’s friends were bantering about something that has to do with the plot, then let them talk all they want, but it was all trash and had nothing to do with the movie. Jessie was knocked out/unconscious for most of the underwater scene. Submerged failed to make Matt a hero, but I think the intention was there. The movie is watchable and forgettable, so watch at your own risk.
