Sun Choke (2015) is an American psychological horror movie that will leave you thinking for several days about human life and how normal it is. Director and writer Ben Cresciman (Negative Space (2011)) did an impressive job creating this horror movie about a female character in crisis. I strongly doubt there will be another nontraditional horror movie like this in 2015 that will make viewers put their outcome in the film. It is a psychodrama that keeps on getting crazier as the movie progresses. The movie flowed nicely with a good pace that did not lose my interest. Some viewers will be disappointed in seeing this movie because it is unique in its way.
Sun Choke begins by introducing us to Janie (Sarah Hagan - Jess + Moss (2011), Orange County (2002), Someday We Will Get Married (2009), Spring Breakdown (2009)) and her life. Irma is Janie’s lifelong nanny that does perform an unorthodox holistic health regime on Janie every day because Janie is recovering from a violent psychotic breakdown. Janie’s father is not in her life but keeps in contact with Irma. It did not take long for us to see Janie being able to leave her home and venture out on LA streets, where she instantly gained an obsession with Savanna. Janie and Savanna soon connect, and Janie’s daily holistic health regime is undone.
Sarah Hagan (Janie) gave a superb performance playing a role of a person that cannot relate to other human beings. The other actors also did a great job, but Sarah gave the best performance in Sun Choke. Light is used amazingly well in this film that left beautiful images/shots days after in my head after I saw the movie. The movie is not for everyone; viewers will either love it or hate it. I didn’t particularly appreciate that the film had no actual beginning, middle, or end and that alone made a path for viewers to decide which direction the movie was going. I liked the visual effects and how the film relates to social realism. The editing department did a flawless job editing this movie with a low budget because the film was all over the place with present time, flashbacks, and memory recall. Sun Choke is a desperately sad movie that portrays the life of a tragedy that ruined several lives.
