Exploring Swamp Thing (1982) through our review, we cover its story, scares, and how it fits into the broader horror genre landscape.
Swamp Thing (1982) 1h 31-min American science fiction horror movie that was based on characters of the same name from DC Comics. Director and co-writer Wes Craven (Scream (1996), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), New Nightmare (1994), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)) did a good job executing this film that doesn’t compare to his other films. Swamp Thing was not a step up the ladder for Wes Craven, but it was well admired and appreciated.
Swamp Thing revolves around scientist Alec Holland (Ray Wise - RoboCop (1987), Jeepers Creepers II (2003), X-Men: First Class (2011)) who was transformed into the Swamp Thing (Dick Durock) because of someone sabotaged his laboratory. He went after Anton Arcane (Louis Jourdan - Octopussy (1983), Gigi (1958), Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948)) who is the one who orchestrated what happened to Alec.
Alec Holland was working with his sister Linda (Nannette Brown - My Boyfriend’s Back (1993)) in the swamp lands on a top-secret bio-engineering project. The project was to create a plant/animal hybrid that can survive in extreme environments. Alec was about to make a breakthrough when Government agent Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau - The Fog (1980), Maude (1972-1978), Creepshow (1982), Escape from New York (1981)) arrives. Dr. Anton Arcane is obsessed with immortality and sends a paramilitary group to steal the project but they killed Linda in the midst of it while Alice manages to escape and Alec finds himself covered in chemicals. Alec ran into the swamp screaming after he caught on fire. Alec emerges from the marsh/swamp as a mutated plant creature who is called the Swamp Thing.
Swamp Thing was not much of a horror film but more if a science fiction, fantasy, and action film. The best part of the movie was the ending where we get to see the Swamp Thing fight in a huge battle. Swamp Thing was entertaining throughout and how can it not be with the entire cast giving us excellent performances along with a good screenplay. The film is by no means visually spectacular but does keep in mind that it is a low-budget movie that well lit for most of the film.
