Tales from the Hood (1995) is an American thriller horror anthology film that touched many subjects about human life today. Director and co-writer Rusty Cundieff (Movie 43 (2013), Chappelle’s Show (2003), Fear of a Black Hat (1993)) did a fantastic job executing this anthology. The anthology is African American-themed and is separated into four short stories that revolve around three drug dealers and a funeral director. The four segments touch on police brutality, monsters in someone’s home that are human, people today might pay for someone’s wrong deeds years ago, racism, criminals, murders and gang violence. The movie contains violence, nudity, bad language, suspense and real life issues.
The movie starts by introducing us to the three young drug dealers. They went to meet mortician, Simms (Clarence Williams III - Mod Squad (1968), The Legend of 1900 (1998), Lee Daniels’ The Butler (2013), Half Baked (1998)) at his funeral home. Mr. Simms said that he found the drugs in an alley and had them safely stashed away. Simms decides to tell the boys some stories that are very disturbing before handing over the drugs.
Segment - Rogue Cop Revelation
Rogue Cop Revelation revolves around a black officer watching three white officers beating and murdering a black politician. The three white officers told the black officer to not say a word or else he will have the same fate as the politician. The dead politician contacts the black officer a year later and haunts him to seek revenge on the officers that killed him.
Segment - Boys Do Get Bruised
Boys Do Get Bruised is about a young boy who arrives at school with bruises on his arm and face. He told his teacher that it is from the monster that resides in his home. It was very disturbing to see who the monster was and how Walter got rid of the monster. Walter also manages to get rid of a bully from school. Very interesting segment.
Segment - KKK Comeuppance
KKK Comeuppance is about a politician that was once a Ku Klux Klansman. The politician moved into a mansion where a massive slave massacre occurred at the end of the Civil War.
Many protesters told him that the souls of the murdered slaves resides in voodoo dolls that are still on the mansion grounds. The politician soon began to believe the protesters after his black assistant died mysteriously. What will the politician do? Many people do not trust the politician, so he does not have many friends.
Segment - Hard Core Convert
Hard Core Convert revolves around a criminal/gangster who is sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. He was offered to have his life sentence dropped if he participated in an experiment. This segment was spectacular and entertaining. Keep in mind that the prisoner would kill everyone if he were given the chance to and he is about to be experimented on. The experiments caused him to hallucinate and see all the victims he murdered
