The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) is a 1h 39-min UK horror film that was shot in London, England, UK. Norwegian director Andre Ovredal (Trollhunter (2010), The Tunnel (2016), Future Murder (2000)) gave us a spectacular treat with his straightforward storytelling that grew more and more intriguing and intense as the movie progresses. The film contains suspense, intense frightening scenes, jump scares, tension, gut churning moments, graphic scenes and a dead.
Tony Tilden (Brian Cox) and his son Austin Tilden (Emile Hirsch) are coroners at a local mortuary in Virginia. Police officers dropped off an unidentified woman’s body for father-son team to identify her and examine her to see why/how she died. The unidentified female (Olwen Kelly) was found buried in a basement of a crime scene. The coroners are pressed for time because the sheriff wants an answer, so they had no choice but to work throughout the night. Tony and Austin quickly figure out that this is not their average ordinary corpse as they try to figure out what was the cause of death. The movie was ever so eerie sending chills up my spine as Tony and Austin began to face supernatural forces that they were not prepared to handle. I was touched emotionally when I saw Austin reaching out to his girlfriend, Emma (Ophelia Lovibond) about how much he needed to leave the family business but does not straight out tell his dad.
I did not think much of this film walking into it because how exciting does two guys performing an autopsy on a female corpse for about 95 minutes sound? I was beyond happy when the movie ended because it was 90 times more than what I imagined it would be and would recommend it to all horror fans. Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch gave us strong performances as they play father-and-son coroner’s that started to experience supernatural phenomena while/after examining an unidentified female’s body. The movie did not take long to unnerve me as there were a few jump scenes that got the best of me. Weak stomach viewers should be warned that some graphic scenes/images that may make your gut churn.
