The Brothers Grimm (2005) is directed by Terry Gilliam (The Fisher King (1991), Twelve Monkeys (1995)) with an $80 million dollar budget. Although the film was moderately entertaining to me and every once in a while, I do rewatch it, the characters are barely developed. Scattered in the film are some great shots, but overall the visuals were average. Many expected this film to be the classical sense of fantasy and enchantment where princesses and whimsical are included but this is based on the Brothers Grimm, so there is a greater sense of dread and grit.
Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity Bourne (2002), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Good Will Hunting (1997), The Departed (2006)) and Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight (2008), Brokeback Mountain (2005), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), The Patriot (2000)) try their hardest to deliver great scenes and that alone should be appreciated. Lena Headley (HBO’s The Game of Thrones) plays Angelika, and Monica Belluci plays the villainous Mirror Queen.
The Brothers Grimm seems like a film that at times feels overly drawn out with its 1h 58min having you checking your watch throughout the film. This film is plagued with a story that is boring most of the time and tries to through in a weak love story. I get that Brothers Grimm tales usually have a twisted story, but it just did not work for most audiences. The ending did not end with a bang but with a silly conclusion that further hurt the film’s rating. Like I said previously, though, I find myself strangely watching this film every so many years, so it has become a guilty pleasure of mine. Watch this film when you have plenty of free time and very little to distract you, but do not expect too much from the story.
