Our take on The Covenant (2006) explores its plot, scares, and horror highlights to help fans decide if it deserves a place on their watchlist.
The Covenant (2006) is a 1h 37-min PG-13 American action fantasy supernatural-horror-thriller film that grossed over $37 million with a budget of about $20 million. Many people believed that The Covenant is based on a book or comic but it is not. The movie was shot at Bishop’s University, Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada; Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. Director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2 (1990), Cliffhanger (1993), Deep Blue Sea (1999), Skiptrace (2016)) did an excellent job executing this creative movie. Renny Harlin did a remarkable job with a small budget that gave us incredible fight scenes, developed characters, average scares, and fantastic special effects. The Covenant contains partial nudity, pervasively strong language, minor violence, suspense, tension and a few small jump scenes.
Caleb, Pogue, Reid, and Tyler are four teenagers who possess magical powers in the town of Ipswich and are known as the "Sons of Ipswich" because they are descendants of witch families. The boys will become more powerful when they reach the age of eighteen, but they will age rapidly because their lifespan will bind. Caleb (Steven Strait - 10,000 BC (2008), City Island (2009), Sky High (2005)) will turn eighteen first and therefore is very cautious while his three other friends are not. Caleb felt unease after supernatural occurrences started to happen at a beach party that he and his friends are attending. Caleb suspect Reid (Toby Hemingway - Black Swan (2010), In Time (2011), The Silent Thief (2012)) was behind the events and did not suspect new transfer students, Chase and Sarah.
Caleb fell heads over heels for Sarah (Laura Ramsey - She’s the Man (2006), The Ruins (2008), Middle Men (2009)) but shortly after suspect Chase of using magic. Caleb discovers that Chase (Sebastian Stan - Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), The Martian (2015)) is from a fifth family. The fifth family was thought extinct and Caleb figures that Chase is behind all the supernatural events. Pogue soon after learns that his girlfriend was put under a spell that put her in a comatose state and went after Chase which led to him being hospitalized.
The Covenant is a cliche to many other movies, but it was a well-made action fantasy horror film that I might just see again. I was surprised to see the love between the two characters as it was realistic and convincing as it can be - well done. I did not like the plot too much, and the dialogue could have been better, but the movie had a small budget after all. The ending was predictable, but if you keep an open mind, then you will enjoy the film for what it is. Give this film a try, and you most likely will not be disappointed.
