The Devil’s Candy (2015) is an American psychological thriller horror movie that surprised me because I was not looking forward to watching it - extremely happy I gave it a chance. Director and writer Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones (2009)) displays his talent showing that he does not fear taking risks (putting his characters in danger) and making the movie very unsettling as it progresses. He also captured the film nicely with displaying different camera angles and sets. The tension, suspense and spine-tingling does not stop throughout as the violence does not stop along with the satanic rituals.
The Devil’s Candy revolves around an innocent family entering their new home that will put them in deadly situations. Jesse (Ethan Embry - Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004), Eagle Eye (2008), Can’t Hardly Wait (1998), Vacancy (2007)) and his family decides to move from their small apartment to a huge house. Jesse and his wife Astrid (Shiri Appleby - Roswell (1999), Swimfan (2002), Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Havoc (2005)) decide to buy the home because it was priced very low. They were informed that the house is selling at a low price because no one wants to purchase the home since the previous two residents died in the home. The real estate agent, however, did not tell them the entire truth about the deaths but instead fabricated the story so that a sale can be made. Jesse is a struggling painter that loves metal music and will do anything to make his family happy. Jesse was excited about their new home because there was even space for an art studio but things quickly took a turn as his artwork became darker. Skip forward, Ray (Pruitt Taylor Vince - Constantine (2005), The Legend of 1900 (1998), Monster (2003), Natural Born Killers (1994)) is the son of the previous owners who died in the home that Jesse now resides in. Ray mysteriously showed up with an electric guitar one night at Jesse’s door asking if he can return home. It was a little too late, but the family realizes that it is the same satanic force that is controlling Jesse and Ray and to make matters worse, the satanic force wants human blood. Ray hears voices that tell him to murder children, and now the voices are telling him to murder Zoey. Zooey (Kiara Glasco - Maps to the Stars (2014), I’ll Follow You Down (2013), Christmas Magic (2011)) is Jesse’s preteen daughter. Will Ray be able to quiet the voices and refrain from killing Zooey? Will Jesse be able to resist listening to the whispers in his ear?
The Devil’s Candy is not the regular satanic movie with supernatural elements that we are used to seeing but instead delivers a film with Satan having people doing his bidding. Satan does not possess people in this movie but uses the nearly insane people by whispering to them to do his ill deeds. What he used to derive from metal music when he worked in his studio has now been replaced by It was a bit difficult to watch Jesse and his family going through this ordeal because we see their pain, struggles and their love for eachother during high and low moments. Pruitt Taylor Vince gave the best performance with him acting like a little boy that is lost inside a terrifying adult man/serial killer that thinks he has no option than to commits multiple murders.
