Tsui Hark’s Vampire Hunters: The Era of Vampire (2003) is a funny movie that is so cheesy that you have to like it at least a little. There is a great deal of wire Kung Fu and very little depth to the characters or plot. Still, I saw the movie and thought it was watchable and good as a late night horror movie.
Four warriors in training are led by their master, and they search the countryside for zombies. The dead build up so much negative energy that they return from the dead as zombies and when they have fed on enough human flesh, they eventually become vampires. The vampires jump around like jumping potato sacks and for me, that is hilarious reminding me of my very first Asian vampire movies from my youth at the local video rental stores.
Did I enjoy this movie, yes I did? Would I watch it again? Not anytime soon but maybe after a few years just to reminisce once again. Director Wellson Chin dropped the ball on this movie though which could have been a real gem.
