The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) is an American drama courtroom crime horror movie that is loosely based on a real life event. Based loosely on the story of Anneliese Michel, who is a German Catholic girl. She was diagnosed with epilepsy, but two priests believed that the devil possessed her. She eventually died of starvation, and the priest was accused by the state of negligent homicide. The priest was accused because they performed sixty-seven, four-hour exorcisms on her within a ten month time frame. Director Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us from Evil (2014), The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)) did a good job making this story into a movie. The movie revolves around the courtroom trial, and we see flashbacks of what Emily was going through.
The movie is about lawyer Erin Bruner (Laura Linney - The Truman Show (1998), Mystic River (2003), Primal Fear (1996)) trying to prove the innocence of Father Richard Moore (Tom Wilkinson - Michael Clayton (2007), Shakespeare in Love (1998), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)) who is a priest. Father Richard is being charged with negligent homicide because of a failed exorcism that led to her dying. The prosecution is trying to prove that Emily did not receive the medical help she needed because they think that she was sick with epilepsy and psychosis. Lawyer Erin is trying to prove that Emily Rose’s family sought Father Richard’s help after psychology and medicine had failed to work on Emily.
During the trial, we see flashbacks of Emily feeling as though she was being taken over by a demon. She could not stay in school and returned home to her parents who thought that Emily is not medically sick. The family then sought help from Father Richard. After a few events, Father Richard warns Erin that the demons may be troubling her because she is involved with the case. Father Richard explained to Erin that 3:00 am is the "devil’s hour" and that is why she is experiencing disturbing things at 3:00 am. There is so much more details about the movie but that will be be all the spoilers you will get from me.
The actors gave a strong performance with their parts. The cinematography, possessions, sets, lighting effect and trial was good. I recommend this movie because it shows/teach us how people look at the case from different angles and the different beliefs. The courtroom trials were done nicely and appeared so realistic. Watch the movie to see what happens to the priest and what happens to Erin after all of her paranormal experiences.
