The Gallows (2015) is an American found footage thriller supernatural horror movie that did not meet my expectations. Writers, editors, producers, visual effects and directors Travis Cluff (Kid HULK (2011), Gold Fools (2012), The Measure of a Man (2011)) and Chris Lofing failed miserably at executing this movie. Travis and Chris Lofing (Kid HULK (2011), The Boys Are Back in Town (2012), Cross (2010)) took on too many roles in this movie. Travis was also an actor in this film where he played the role of Mr. Schwendiman. These two guys took way too much upon themselves, and they could not excel at executing the movie. The film contains minor violence, little blood, plot holes, daunting screenplay, boring actors, mild bad language, one graphic, gruesome scene and one jump scare.
The students at Beatrice High School decided that it will be a good idea to do a play honoring Charlie who accidentally died twenty something years ago. Charlie was part of a play called The Gallows in 1993, and he was accidently hung while on stage. Ryan (Ryan Shoos - Mud (2005), As Night Comes (2014), Pretty Little Liars (2010)) the jock. Ryan’s girlfriend Cassidy (Cassidy Gifford - God’s Not Dead (2014), Adventures of Serial Buddies (2011), Kathie Lee Gifford: We Need a Little Christmas (1996)) does not like the play honoring Charlie. She plans on destroying the set of the play the night before the play opens. Cassidy’s friend Reese (Reese Mishler - Youthful Daze (2012), Medicine Men (2012), The Doors (2013)) plays the lead role in the play. Ryan, Cassidy, Reece and Reece secret crush Pfeifer (Pfeifer Brown - Deep Inner Stillness (2015), Molly’s Method (2014), My Many Sons (2015)) are in a twist as they try to fight off the vengeful ghost of Charlie. Will the students survive ghostly Charlie who wants to hang all of them for sins they have committed or will they die?
Overall - The movie is not one that I would recommend because almost everything was bad about the movie. The actors did not put their best foot forward when performing in this movie. Ryan was a terrible actor that was hard to watch because he was too obnoxious. Cassidy did not seem to care much about her role because she was either happy or sad - no in between and no other expressions from her. Reese was the only actor that did an okay job - not a good job but just okay on his performance. I think the movie could have been better if Charlie had more screen time. The twist at the end of the film was fine, but I was hoping for a backstory on Charlie’s hanging.
