This in-depth review of The Gingerdead Man (2005) explores its story, characters, and scares in detail, offering insights for every horror fan.
The Gingerdead Man (2005) is a one h 10 min American fantasy-horror-comedy shot in Cadillac Jack’s Cafe in Sun Valley, Los Angeles, California, USA, and other locations in Los Angeles, California, USA. Director Charles Band (Blood Dolls (1999), Puppetmaster (1989), The Dungeonmaster (1984), and Trancers (1984)) failed to bring us an entertaining movie. I second doubted whether I wanted to see this film, but I had no choice, although I knew I was in for a dreadful watch because I needed to see it to write this review to warn others. The Gingerdead Man was an utter waste of my time, and everyone should stay as far away as possible from this film because it brings nothing good to the eyes.
The Gingerdead Man starts in a diner called Cadillac Jacks where Sarah Leigh (Robin Sydney - The Lost (2006), American Muscle (2014), Gingerdead Man Vs. Evil Bong (2013)) is seen hiding behind a booth. She is hiding because Millard Findlemeyer (Gary Busey - Lethal Weapon (1987), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Point Break (1991), Predator 2 (1990)) was shooting her father and her brother. Millard finally shot at Sarah after he was rambling about something and heard sirens.
The Gingerdead Man skips forward to Sarah trying to keep the bakery business going and what would have been Jeremy’s 21st birthday if he had survived. Sarah is worried because wealthy Jimmy Dean (Larry Cedar - Constantine (2005), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), The Crazies (2010), National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007)) and his daughter Lorna are opening a bakery across the street. Lorna (Alexia Aleman - Angels (2009), Close Call (2004), The Beach Boys: An American Family (2000)) is obnoxious and considers herself a beauty queen. Will Jimmy and Lorna be able to run Sarah out of business who has no help from her mother Betsy (Margaret Blye - The Italian Job(1969), The Entity (1982), Hombre (1967), Hard Times (1975)), who is an alcoholic. Betsy carries a rifle with her and is still mourning her son and husband’s death.
Sarah received a mysterious package containing gingerbread mix on the store’s doorstep.
The movie takes a slight turn/twist when we discover the mix is mixed with the ashes of Millard, who died and was cremated. Millard’s mom wants her son to have revenge on Sarah, who testified against Millard, leading him to be electrocuted, so she sends the package to Sarah. Sarah’s employee Brick (Jonathan Chase - Gamer (2009), Another Gay Movie (2006), Eagle Eye (2008), and Love Thy Neighbor (2013-2014)) accidentally cuts himself and bleeds into the gingerbread mix. Although it was bled on, Sarah and Brick prepared the mixture and baked the giant gingerbread man cookie. Skip forward, and we see the killer coming to life as a gingerbread man.
I love movies with a killer gingerbread man, but this film fell short in so many areas, including making the gingerbread man not entertaining, and the few body counts in this movie did not help. The actors caused a poor job, as well as the sound, makeup, editing, and writer. I would not recommend this film to anyone because it made me want to fall asleep so many times, but I kept forcing myself to stay up.
