Our honest review of The Grudge 2 (2006) breaks down its scares, pacing, and whether this horror movie truly stands the test of time.
The Grudge 2 (2006) is a 1h 42-min PG-13 American supernatural thriller horror film that is a sequel to The Grudge (2004) and grossed over $70 million at the box office with an estimated budget of $20 million. Director and co-writer Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge (2004), Ju-on: The Grudge (2002), Ju-On: The Grudge 2 (2003)) did an excellent job shooting the film in Pasadena, California, USA; Tokyo, Japan, and Chicago, Illinois, USA. Director Takashi said that The Grudge 2 (2006) follows a different storyline and is not a remake of Japanese film. His use of static shots, slow camera movements, and long shots was well received as it sends a sense of dread through you and fills the atmosphere with fear. I cannot get enough of Takashi’s intoxicating audio and visual style as he masterfully executed the film, but it was all seen before in its predecessor.
The Grudge 2 contains even pacing, terrific actors, gripping drama, tension, terrifying sound design, non-linear sequences of events from 2004-2006 and had intersecting subplots. Horror fans will be please to know that there were more than three terrifying moments in the film that send chills up my spine. The fear factor was there but was decreased, and my enjoyment level was lowered. Horror fans who has not seen part one should have an ecstatic time with The Grudge 2.
The storyline was somewhat similar to the first Grudge, but there were more bland characters that I did not care for in this film.
The Grudge 2 revolves around young Aubrey (Amber Tamblyn - 127 Hours (2010), Django Unchained (2012), The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005), The Ring (2002)) venturing out into the streets of Tokyo. Aubrey is determined to find out what happened to her sister but ultimately gets herself into the same situation her sister was in. Will Aubrey conquer the ghost or will the ghost give her the same fate her sister received?
There was not much gore, and there was not much blood to be seen. The entire cast was great as they did justice to their roles by giving us impressive performances making our experience an intense one. The minimal soundtrack was chilling and flowed well with its contents. The Grudge 2 was an easy watch that was creepy and did what it was supposed to do - scare us! With all said, I might see the movie again in the dark when I want a good scary movie to watch on a rainy night.
