The Guardian (1990) is a 1h 32-min rated R American drama mystery horror film that was based on Dan Greenburg‘s 1987 novel The Nanny. Director William Friedkin (The Exorcist (1973), The French Connection (1971), Killer Joe (2011), Rules of Engagement (2000)) did a fantastic job with the suspense, little goriness, violence, but was unable to give us at least some chills. I had high expectations for this film because William outdid himself with previous movies but somehow fell extremely short with The Guardian. The screenplay appears to be solid, but maybe editing did a little too much editing - not sure who is to blame but the movie was terrible.
Attractive Camilla (Jenny Seagrove - Local Hero (1983), Judge John Deed (2001-2007), Hold the Dream (1986)) is our charming nanny who has a mysterious side to her. Parents Kate (Carey Lowell - Licence to Kill (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), Law & Order (1996-2001)) and Phil were impressed by Camilla. Kate and Phil (Dwier Brown - Field of Dreams (1989), Red Dragon (2002), The Cutting Edge (1992)) hired her to take care of their newborn son and find themselves joking about who the new nanny would be. Little did the couple know that they are about to embark on a dangerous adventure with Camilla, but it did not take long for them to discovers that their dearest nanny is a Hamadryad. They also found out that the former child under Camilla’s care went missing.
Phil began to have nightmares about Jake and wild animals after Camilla enters their household, but not all the dreams are scary as some of them are of him and Camilla being intimately involved. This movie did not keep any secret as it gives you the feeling that something is dreadfully wrong with Camilla from the beginning. Our suspicions were confirmed during the scene with the three thugs harassing her. Ned (Brad Hall - Bye Bye Love (1995), Brooklyn Bridge (1991-1993), Must Love Dogs (2005), A Bug’s Life (1998)) saw Camilla with the trees and became jealous - a scene that should not be missed as wolves attack him. Ned ran home to call Phil and the police, and we all can guess how the movie flows from that point on.
Overall, I would recommend everyone to stay clear of The Guardian or guard yourself against the Guardian as it was a painful watch with many plot holes and unanswered questions.
