I grew up watching Hercules and love it so I was looking forward to this movie. Disappointed - movie feels blah for me because my standards were high walking into the theater. The great part is that the movie is rated PG-13 and I will let my kids watch it because it only contains tons of violence and one short scene implying s**ual content. If it did contain more then please do not blame me because I might have just nodded off for a moment or two. The Legend of Hercules (2014) has no blood/gore, no suspense, not so good acting and a whole lot of battling. The battling scenes involves swords, stabbing, bodies being impaled with things, brutal fighting moments, people being crushed amongst other things and of course beaten. I could not believe that director Renny Harlin (Devil’s Pass, 5 Days of War, The Covenant) made this movie fail with such a huge budget.
Hercules (Kellan Lutz - Java Heat, A Warrior’s Heart, A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Hebe (Gaia Weiss - Mary Queen of Scots, La nuit) are in love with each other and decided to run away together because Heba is set to wed Iphicles (Liam Garrigan - Small Dark Places, He Kills Coppers, New Blood) who is Hercules’ step brother. They tried to escape the castle, but there were too many soldiers and Hercules was captured. His stepfather King Amphitryon (Scott Adkins) sent him on a doomsday mission with some soldiers to face an entrapment in a cavern that is surrounded by skilled archers. The king sent Hercules away because he has made an arrangement and has ordered for him to be killed. The King wants his son and Hercules’ step brother to marry the love of Hercules’ life, Hebe.
Hercules, also known as Prince Alcides, is the secret son of Zeus. Hercules was born so that he can take the kingdom from King Amphitryon. Will Hercules succeed on what he was born to do? If you really want to know after all I have said then ask someone and do not waste your time to watch the movie.
I gave this movie a four because it strays away from the Hercules story I grew up with and love. It appeared to be more of a Gladiator movie than the myth it was suppose to be. Kellan Lutz was the best actor in this movie and saved it from receiving a two, but he did not act to the best of his abilities as the other movies I have seen. The CGI effects were also done well, but one good actor and the CGI effects cannot save a bad storyline. What a huge disappointment. Save your money and time from seeing The Legend of Hercules and go see HBO’s Game of Thrones or 300.
