Our review of The Midnight Game (2013) dives into the story, the scares, and whether it truly delivers the horror fans crave.
The Midnight Game (2013) is an American supernatural thriller based on the creepypasta of the same name. Director and co-writer A.D. Calvo (Nine Lives (2006), The Other Side of the Tracks (2008), House of Dust (2013)) did an okay job executing this movie that revolves around urban legend games. Calvo did a fantastic job building the suspense, tension, and thrills. The cast did a great job portraying their character, giving a natural feel to their friendship and not appearing forced. The Midnight Man game is a game you should not take lightly as it requires you to turn out the lights in your home, light a candle, and knock on the door 22 times, with the final knock occurring directly at midnight. The game’s primary goal is to keep your candle lit to avoid the Midnight Man. You will have ten seconds to relight the candle in the event it goes out, or the Midnight Man will get you. If the Midnight Man gets you, you will have to live your darkest fears continuously until you die.
The Midnight Game revolves around a group of teens who are alone for the weekend because of Kaitlan’s (Renee Olstead - Still Standing (2002), The Insider (1999), 13 Going on 30 (2004)) mom is away for the weekend. Kaitlan is alone in her home for the weekend and invites her friend Jenna (Valentina de Angelis - Off the Map (2003), Bereavement (2010), Everlasting (2016), Liminality (2005)), who decides to bring Rose with her. Jenna also decides to invite over Shane (Guy Wilson - Days of Our Lives (1965), The Moon and He (2008), Youthful Daze (2012), Little Black Book (2004)), and Jeff. Shane and Jeff show up with beers and soon after suggest they play a game he found on the internet, The Midnight Man. The teenagers started playing the Midnight Game, but strange things began happening soon. They have to find a way to save their lives, and the only way they can think of is to replay the game, and hopefully, they will get it right. Will they survive with shadows creeping everywhere and with personalities changing?
There was nothing new in this film, but it was still a spectacular movie that delivered well. Although the film was not scary to make you jump but will make the hairs stand on the back of your neck. The performances from the young cast were excellent, and the eeriness during the entire film can be felt. I would recommend this film to younger viewers.
