The Mist (2007) is directed by Frank Darabont who also wrote the screenplay off the novel written by Stephen King. This movie adaptation does a decent job trying to convert a story that still feels incomparable to what the audience could experience if they read the story instead. The Mist had an estimated total budget of $18 million in which it pulled in $8.9 million opening week at the box office.
The Mist follows Artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane - Deep Blue Sea (1999), Dreamcatcher (2003), Face/Off (1997)) and his son (Nathan Gamble) as they try to fix up their home a little after a storm passed through. They head into town for groceries and materials. After some events, they end up trapped inside the local supermarket with a thick mist outside harboring strange monsters and beasts. Anyone who goes outside ends up tragically dy**g a gruesome death. The cast includes many famous actors like Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden (AMC’s The Walking Dead), Andre Braugher (Salem‘s Lot), Toby Jones (Fox’s Wayward Pines), William Sadler (Syfy’s Z Nation, Ava’s Possessions (2015), Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995)), Jeffrey DeMunn (AMC’s The Walking Dead), Frances Sternhagen, Alexa Davalos, Chris Owen, Sam Witwer (Officer Downe (2016), Tales of Halloween (2015), Syfy’s Being Human), and Melissa McBride (AMC’s The Walking Dead).
For a movie adaptation of this kind, many elements had to be changed which ticked off many fans of the original novel version by Stephen King. That being said and put aside, the film did try to keep the mystery, thrill, tension, and sadness at the end as best as it could. The entire cast gave us a terrific performance with the sound department delivering a pleasant experience to each scene. The CG effects look average and are not interesting with tentacles reaching out of the mist to kill its victims as the result. Yeah, it is scary a bit, but there is no real "thing" to hold the viewer’s attention as the monster(s). Getting to the end is going to be tiresome for most viewers, but if you do, the ending does not pull back any punches. The ending can be considered a smack in the face to the viewers and characters creating an intense end to the film.
