Where does The Other Side of the Door (2016) stand among horror films? Our review examines the scares, pacing, and what makes it unique in the genre.
The Other Side of the Door (2016) is an India/UK horror film that is 96 minute and is also known as El otro lado de la puerta (in Spain); Az ajtón túl (in Hungary) and Po tamtej stronie drzwi (in Poland). Director and co-writer Johannes Roberts (Storage 24 (2012), F (2010), Hellbreeder (2004)) did a brilliant job executing this film in Mumbai, India. The movie had the right amount of blood (not too much), suspense, thrills, tension, and jump scares throughout. It made me jump a few times, so I am not sure if this film is suitable your teenagers who are horror fans. I like that there was a backstory to Maria, and it made me able to connect with her and her grieve as a mother. The Other Side of the Door was a heart touching movie that was mostly a sad watch for me but nevertheless, I enjoyed it.
The Other Side of the Door revolves around Maria (Sarah Wayne Callies - The Walking Dead (2010), Prison Break (2005), Into the Storm (2014)) who is a mother that did the inevitable to say goodbye to her dead son. Sarah’s husband Michael (Jeremy Sisto - Law & Order (1990), Suburgatory (2011), Clueless (1995), Wrong Turn (2003)) and their kids are living in India. A tragic accident occurs one day that took the couple’s young son, Oliver (Logan Creran - Steel (2015), Wait Till Helen Comes (2016), Menorca (2016)) leaving Maria inconsolable. Maria performs a ritual that will allow her to say her final goodbyes to Oliver, but the ceremony did not go the way she planned. She did what everyone do in a horror movie, she did not obey the warnings and caused chaos to fall upon her family. She opened a door that she was warned not to resulting in opening the door between the living and dead. I will leave you with this, their daughter Lucy (Sofia Rosinsky - Zoe and the Prince (2015), Our Little Secret (2016), Bloodline (2013)) is possessed and kills their dog. Watch the movie because it was a nice horror flick that I am happy I have seen.
Sarah Wayne Callies did a fantastic job with her role as a desperate mother that brought more tragedy upon her family as she caused nightmarish possessions from evil spirits onto her family. The cinematographer did an excellent job adding eeriness, creepy moments and scary factors. The tension throughout the movie, build up, suspense, predictable narrative, and jump scares is what made this movie work along with the top notch acting, visual effects, make-up, and horror. With all said, the movie was disturbing at times when I saw the child with empty eye sockets and amongst other things that I cannot mention because I will be giving the movie away.
