HellHorror’s review of The Secret Life: Jeffrey Dahmer (1993) breaks down the plot, scares, cast performances, and its lasting impact on the horror genre.

The Secret Life: Jeffrey Dahmer (1993) 1h 39 min American biography crime-drama film that was shot in several locations in California, USA. Director, producer and composer David R. Bowen (Witchtrap (1989), Season of Fear (1989)) did a fabulous job executing this very informative movie. The film informs us at the beginning of the movie that events/details have been changed, but it still manages to capture Jeffrey’s inexplicable acts.

Jeffrey Dahmer is one of the world’s notorious necrophile, and cannibalistic serial killers in history and it did not take long for a film to be made about him - it only took two years to make him famous. Jeffrey’s apartment was revealed to be a chamber of horrors where he tortured his victims to death and sliced/chopped up the victims bodies and froze them. Carl Crew (Blood Diner (1987), Urban Legends (1998), Gross Out (1990)) did a fantastic job portraying Jeffrey who committed his cannibalistic murders for 14 years. Jeffrey killed about 17 males and kept their body parts as part of his trophy collection.

It was terrifying to see how Jeffrey descended into madness as he works through his abandonment issues. Serial killer movies tend to make me see the world for what it is and makes me realize that we are not safe as we think we might be. The film was remotely interesting but very entertaining in the sense that we get to see a movie where it is based on actual crimes, although fictionalized for legal measures, which make it captivating as we see Jeffrey’s psychopathic behavior.

Carl Crew did justice to his part/role as his acting was convincible/realistic as can be because he knows how to perpetrate horror. The thought of knowing that all the events happened in real life is so gut-wrenching that it makes you want to puke. The movie contains extreme violence, gore, suspense, intense scenes, chaos, s**ual suggestions but no nudity, disturbing, frightening scenes, serial killer, blood splatter, decapitation, dead animal, taxidermy, and bloody murders. With all said, the movies low budget can be easily seen, but it does not take away from the story.
