Our honest review of The Skeleton Key (2005) breaks down its scares, pacing, and whether this horror movie truly stands the test of time.
The Skeleton Key (2005) is directed by Iain Softley and written by Ehren Kruger. This film is a horror mystery thriller that focuses on the atmosphere and less on the gore as most horror movies. The Skeleton Key had an estimated budget of $43 million grossing $47 million at the box office.
The Skeleton Key is about a hospice nurse named Caroline Ellis (Kate Hudson) who travels to a creepy looking New Orleans plantation. At the plantation, she is given access to every room except one. Suspicions rise, and Caroline slowly starts to find things stranger by the days. Eventually, she discovers the secrets of the house and its inhabitants to the risk of her life.
This film has a great mood and atmosphere to it but moves slowly building on the mystery and suspense. Some of you might start looking at the time but stick with it; the ending is worth it. The ending is something that you can see coming but with good movies of this kind; you still want to see if your suspicions were right. The acting is done well, and some of the actors change their entire persona on a dime. Kate Hudson did a great job getting me emotionally attached to her character making me want to see the outcome. Enjoy this film with Gena Rowlands, John Hurt, and Peter Sarsgaard as they weave a pleasant story of Voodoo and mysticism.
