Where does The Ugly (1997) stand among horror films? Our review examines the scares, pacing, and what makes it unique in the genre.
Scott Reynolds wrote and directed this artistic, imaginative, yet surprisingly unknown Aussie slasher flick about Simon Cartwright (Paolo Rotundo). Simon is an incarcerated serial killer who has requested that newly famous psychiatrist Dr. Schumaker (Rebecca Hobbs) re-evaluate him. You get to see Simon’s troubled childhood and previous murders through flashbacks as Dr. Schumaker searches for the reason behind his insanity. One begins to feel a kind of pity for Simon when we see how his hand is forced by the dark power known only as The Ugly. The ending has a twist and is somewhat hard for most people to draw a conclusion from. However, this is definately a must see film, and one of my personal favorites.
