Titan A.E. (2000) is a 1h 34 min PG American animated science fiction action-adventure film that was shot in Fox Animation Studios - 2747 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Titan A.E. had an estimated budget of between $75–$90 million and grossed about $36 million at the box office. Titan A.E. had three directors, Art Vitello (Slimer! And the Real Ghostbusters (1988-1989), Adventures of the Gummi Bears (1985-1988), The Tick (1994-1995), Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. Don Bluth and Gary Goldman has worked together on The Secret of NIMH (1982), All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989), Thumbelina (1994), and Anastasia (1997).
Titan A.E. takes place in the year 3028 where aliens known as Drej attacks Earth and destroy it because they think that the humans will suck up all of their energy; the Drej are made up of energy. Several people escape along with the Titan Project which is a spaceship that contains crucial information that has to be kept hidden from the Drej. Cale is the creator of the Titans son and was left behind for the greater good of the universe. Cale spends his days working on anonymous colonies in space. Korso (Bill Pullman) who has collaborated with Cale’s father on the Titan has tracked down Cale and taught Cale how to work his dad’s ring which puts the universe faith in his hands.
The hide-and-seek chase through the collapsing ice of Tigrin was truly amazing. The main problem is that the story was not set up well and there were not enough details given about the characters which led some things to go downhill from there. It appears as though many images were pulled directly from Space Ace and that would not have been a problem if the film was a little exciting and had a sense of wonder since it is an animation science fiction tale. Titan A.E. had enormous potential but fell short in too many areas and would have benefited from not being animated. There was no suspense whatsoever in the film. Titan A.E. does not create a visual feast for us but instead gave us several pieces from other movies. The action scenes were nonchalant so it was nowhere close to mind-blowing and the soundtrack was terrible. The movie is not for everyone, and I think new video viewers/goers without much movie knowledge will enjoy this movie more than others.
