Tremors 4: The Legend Begins (2004) is an American action comedy horror movie that is the fourth film in the Tremors series and went straight to direct-to-video. Director, actor and co-writer S.S. Wilson (Tremors (1990), Wild Wild West (1999), Heart and Souls (1993), Tremors II: Aftershocks (1996)) did an awesome job executing this movie compared to Tremors 3: Back to Perfection (2001). I was not anticipating to sit down and watch this movie because I thought it was going to be worse than Tremors 3, but I was wrong. I am happy I gave this film a chance because it is the second best in the Tremors series. The movie contains graphic images/scenes that might not be suitable for the squeamish crowd. There are several gory, graphic scenes, but one that viewers may have a hard time handling is when there was guts and blood everywhere after a train ripped a Graboid in half.
A hot spring caused Graboid eggs to hatch in 1889 causing 17 miners to die. The townspeople rely on the income they receive from the silver mine. Mine owner Hiram Gummer (Michael Gross - Family Ties (1982), Tremors (1990), Tremors 3: Back to Perfection (2001)) is not a friendly person, but he is a well-mannered business person. Hiram calls Black Hand Kelly (Billy Drago - The Untouchables (1987), The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection (1990)) who is a gunfighter to get rid of the Graboids which the townspeople calls "Dirt Dragons." Hiram promises Black as much silver as he can carry as payment when the mines reopen and also gives him his double eagle watch and diamond cuffs as a down payment. Hiram and Kelly do not get along well and Hiram flees the town after a Graboid/Dirt Dragon eats Kelly alive. After a few events, Hiram returns to the town to help them battle the Graboids although he does not know how to use weapons and is not very physically active.
I enjoyed the rest of the movie and the showdown between the humans and Graboids. I was not pleased that Tremors 4 was set/took place before Tremors 3. Tremors 4 was set in a town called Rejection and is now known as Perfection. Tremors 4, however, stands out because of its originality when it reveals the worms/Graboids, and I love that they did not use much CGI and did it the old fashion way. Maybe they learned from Tremors 3 and decided to use the same technique they did in Tremors. The actors were exceptionally good with their roles and gave a fantastic performance. The sets were nicely done, and the fight scenes rock. The special effects could have been better, but I am not complaining because there are so many movies out there that cannot stand up to this film.
