Where does Vampires (1998) stand among horror films? Our review examines the scares, pacing, and what makes it unique in the genre.
John Carpenter‘s Vampires (1998) has the master of horror bringing us this film as one of his better last films he has directed. Carpenter had an estimated budget of $20 million with the box office run totaling $20 million; breaking even.
Vampires has a lot of vampire action with hunters getting massacred in the first segment of the movie. The leader of the vampire hunter group and last survivor, Jack Crow played by James Woods (Once Upon a Time in America (1984), Casino (1995), Videodrome (1983)), tries to figure out who betrayed his team and what the master vampire has planned.
The first few moments of this film sets a high expectation for the rest of the film that it does not deliver on. The high paced action and group previously introduced are immediately wiped out by a master vampire. I guess it sets up how evil and vile this master vampire is but does drastically change the tone of the film. Who sold them out? This vampire movie then turns into a fantastic vampire mythology ride and focuses more on the thriller aspect.
The acting was good from most of the cast, but James Woods carried the film with the level of tenacity we expect from him in a movie. The special effects were good most of the time but suffered a little in some of the scenes towards the end of the film. Watch John Carpenter‘s Vampires, but it is not one of Carpenter’s better films.
