Legendary monster hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) is sent to mysterious Transylvania. From here the story picks up into a bold retelling of the Bram Stoker and Hammer Films version of Van Helsing. Van Helsing is a younger character who physically battles every monster he comes across. In this horror film, his main adversary is Count Dracula, but there is also a werewolf, Frankenstein’s monster, the three vampire brides, and hordes of vampire bats who are the spawn of Dracula. Dracula‘s spawn are born dead so Dracula needs to find out how Frankenstein’s monster was reanimated so he can bring his spawn to life. Then there is the part about the feud between Van Helsing, also known as Gabriel now, and Count Dracula that stretches way beyond the scope of the films time.
Van Helsing was an incredibly large movie in depth that director Stephen Sommers took on. The graphics are astounding for this time and a treat to see. But, it all comes down to that there was just so many characters to introduce and so many plot elements. I love what was done here and think that it was still pulled off pretty well considering this could have been an easy trilogy. I enjoyed watching Van Helsing and periodically watch it again.
