This in-depth review of Virtuosity (1995) explores its story, characters, and scares in detail, offering insights for every horror fan.

Brett Leonard (The Lawnmower Man (1992), Hideaway (1995)Feed (2005)) directed the movie Virtuosity (1995) from a script written by Eric Bernt. This movie had an estimated budget of $30 million but grossed $24 million at the box office. Virtuosity is rated R for intense violence and mature matters.

Virtuosity stars Lt. Parker Barnes (Denzel Washington - Training Day (2001), American Gangster (2007), Man on Fire (2004), Inside Man (2006)) as an ex-cop who must return to fight a sci-fi monster of a being. Russell Crowe (Gladiator (2000), A Beautiful Mind (2001), L.A. Confidential (1997)) plays SID 6.7 who is a virtual reality simulation that was created by merging the personalities of multiple notorious serial killers, over 200 serial killers including Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy, and the killer who killed Lt. Barnes’ wife and child. SID 6.7 has escaped into the real world, and only former Lt. Barnes can capture him, not before he kills many people.

Virtuosity does a great job of keeping the viewer entertained for most of the film. Washington vs. Crowe was a great idea, and the two actors play well against one another. Beauties Kelly LynchKaley Cuoco, Traci Lords, and Mari Morrow round out the cast adding the sensuality to the film. There is no originality in this film, and the film is primarily focused on Barnes and SID. No other characters matter much or do anything special. I recommend you give Virtuosity a chance as it is a good watch despite its flaws.
