Our review of Wer (2013) dives into the story, the scares, and whether it truly delivers the horror fans crave.
Wer (2013) is an American mystery thriller horror movie that was filmed in Bucharest, Romania. Director, editor and co-writer William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside (2012), Stay Alive (2006), Sparkle and Charm (1997)) did an astounding job with this werewolf movie. He did better than some directors who have directed over 20 movies. I would love to see William write and direct more horror movies. Wer is one of the best werewolf movies I have seen in a long time, and I love that there was not much CG used in this movie. The werewolf was scary creepy but still looked similar to its human self. William did an amazing job making Wer seem realistic by adding a real disease and explaining the disease with true science.
Wer starts out being in a found footage format and ends in being in a found footage format. I think that was done to give the movie more of a realistic feel, and it worked as my readers might know - I am not a fan of found footage movies. A family records themselves being attacked and mauled by someone or something they do not know on a full moon. The police hold huge and hairy Talan Gwynek (Brian Scott O’Connor) in custody because he fits the description. Defense attorney Kate (A.J. Cook - Criminal Minds (2005), Final Destination 2 (2003), The Virgin Suicides (1999)) and some associated were brought in to investigate if the crimes/murders were done by Talan or an animal. SPOILER: Talan escaped into Paris after he lost his temper and killed all of his doctors. He went on to killing innocent people in the Paris area.
Half of the movie revolves around the attorney and her associates trying to prove that Talan is innocent. She is determined to prove his innocence although she knows that he is a French werewolf and that they are the least dangerous. I was puzzled during the first half of the investigation, but everything was answered as the movie goes on - so have patience, and your questions will be answered. The fighting scenes in Wer is one that action horror fans must see - it was awesome. The acting, special effects, story build up, screenplay, makeup and set were all excellent. I gave this movie a seven because Talan just grows facial hair and does not transform into a werewolf so therefore he is more like a humanoid wolf. As I said above - I do not like found footage.
