Exploring Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies (1999) through our review, we cover its story, scares, and how it fits into the broader horror genre landscape.
Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies (1999) is a fantasy horror movie that is the sequel to Wishmaster. Director and co-writer Jack Sholder (Alone in the Dark (1982), The Hidden (1987), A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985)) did not make this movie any better than the first Wishmaster movie. The movie contains s**ual scenes, bad language, violence, nudity, dark humor, suspense and some graphic deaths/kills.
The Djinn (Andrew Divoff - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), Air Force One (1997), Wishmaster (1997)) was mistakenly set free when the fire opal that contained it was shot with a stray bullet during a robbery at the museum it was kept at. Morgana Truscott (Holly Fields - Spider-Man 2 (2004), Roomies (2004), Communion (1989)) was one of the robbers who stole the gem and had no choice but to leave her partner behind while they were escaping. The Djinn killed the other robbers and revealed himself in full-size form to the police officers who arrested him. Morgana slept good that night and went to the church the next morning to see her ex-boyfriend Gregory (Paul Johansson - John Q (2002), Alpha Dog (2006), The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009)) who found God and joined the priesthood. She did not see Gregory at the church and left.
The Djinn’s human form is known as Nathaniel Demerest. Nathaniel is having fun in prison killing everyone that wishes without knowing that their wish will actually come true in the vilest way. Butz (Rhino Michaels - Demolition Man (1993), Universal Soldier (1992), Fathers’ Day (1997)) and the Tiger brothers (James Kim and Simon Kim) warn Nathaniel that he will be watching him because there is something strange about him. Morgana is afraid of the creature that tortures her and cannot be seen, so she researched Persian Mythology on her computer. She read about a Persian deity Ahura Mazda that is known as both light/good and dark/evil and as the keeper of the Stone of the Sacred Fire.
After a few more events, Morgana visits Nathaniel at the prison to get an answer as to why Nathaniel took the blame for the robbery when he knew he would be put in Jail. He revealed his true demon form to Morgana; that terrified her and made her leave. She also wanted to know why she is all of a sudden getting these nightmares with sleepless nights. She went home to do some more research, and her window blows open making papers fly everywhere as she discovers who the Djinn really is. She figures out that someone with a pure soul and a pure heart can only destroy the Djinn and put him back into the fire opal. The Djinn’s mission is to capture 1000 souls and grant the releaser/Morgana three wishes before he can create hell on earth by unleashing his Djinn brothers on Earth.
Watch the movie if you would like to know what Morgana plans to do. It was a nice horror movie, but I will not see it again because it was a little too dragged on for me. I gave this movie a five because I like how the Djinn manipulated everyone to wish for something and then twisted the wishes to be what he wanted resulting in their deaths. The gory scenes were nicely done. If you like the first Wishmaster then, you will definitely enjoy this one.
