5ive Girls (2006) is a 1h 35-min Canadian thriller horror film that was shot in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Director, editor, and writer Warren P. Sonoda (Swearnet: The Movie (2014), Trailer Park Boys (2014-2015), Coopers’ Camera (2008)) did a good job directing his second film, but he needed more training at that point in his directing career. 5ive Girls was not his best piece of work and are not something that I will watch again.
5ive Girls takes place at St. Mark’s girls Catholic boarding school. Elizabeth (Krysta Carter - Chloe (2009), Cyber Seduction: His Secret Life (2005), Forbidden Fruit (2010)) was the first one to be attacked by unseen evil forces that took her away without leaving any trace of her. Father Drake (Ron Perlman - Hellboy (2004), Hand of God (2014-2016), Blade II (2002), Sons of Anarchy (2008-2013)) tried to help/save her, but his power was no match or the evil entity. The school is closed and reopens five years later with the headmistress being Miss Pearce (Amy Lalonde - Diary of the Dead (2007), Sophie (2008-2009), Victor (2008)) who is not so friendly. Father Drake still works at the school but became a drunk after Elizabeth’s disappearance.
Alex (Jennifer Miller - Lucky Number Slevin (2006), The Best Years (2007-2009), The Naked Mile (2006)), Mara, Cecilia who is blind, Leah, and Connie are five girls who are unwanted by their families and is left at the school. Cecilia (Terra Vnesa - Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (2011), Hurt (2003), Too Young to Be a Dad (2002)) and Mara disobey the rules and enter the third floor although it is strictly forbidden. Alex began having visions of Elizabeth as strange things start to happen around her leading them to discover that the five unwanted girls have supernatural gifts. Miss Pearce has plans that involve the five girls, and she brought the five girls to the school for a particular reason.
The special effects were not perfect and could have used a little more effort, but the storyline needed rehab. Ron Perlman who played Father Drake was the best actor in this film and he, of course, aced his role, and it is no surprise since he is a strong actor. All of the female actors were beautiful and gave us average performances that made me care about them. The cinematography was nicely done giving us spooky atmospheric bits with creepy ghost apparitions amongst other things. The sound did not flow well with the movie, but the opening techno with a prayer chanted from the Bible was a nice touch. 5ive Girls had the potential of being something worthy of watching if it had stuck to a tone instead of jumping from one place to another which made it too tacky and cheap.
