Horror fans will enjoy our review of The Omen (2006), where we cover its story, scares, and how it ranks among modern horror classics.
The Omen (2006) is a one h 50-min rated R American supernatural fantasy-mystery horror film that is also known as The Omen: 666 (2006) and is a remake of The Omen (1976). The Omen was intentionally released on June 6, 2006, because of the number of the Beast, 666. Director John Moore (A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), Behind Enemy Lines (2001), Max Payne (2008)) did an excellent job executing this film with great camera angles and spectacular visual effects. The movie was shot in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland; Croatia; Rome, Lazio, Italy and several locations in the Czech Republic. The action scenes and gore were a little disturbing.
American diplomat Robert Thorn (Liev Schreiber - X-Men Origins: Wolverine,(2009), Spotlight (2015), Salt (2010), Scream 3 (2000)) was told that his son died during birth while Robert was stationed in Italy. His unconscious wife, Katherine (Julia Stiles - The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), Silver Linings Playbook (2012)) does not know of her son dy**g during birth. A Catholic priest, Father Spiletto (Giovanni Lombardo Radice - Gangs of New York (2002), Cannibal Ferox (1981), City of the Living Dead (1980)), advised Robert to adopt a newborn orphan. Robert named the baby boy Damien (Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick - Before Midnight (2013), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), Everybody’s Fine (2009)) and lived life as though Damien was his real son.
About five years later, Robert became the Deputy Ambassador to the Court of St. James. Shortly after, the previous ambassador moved into a large estate just outside London. It did not take long for disturbing supernatural events to occur. Photographer Keith Jennings (David Thewlis - Naked (1993), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), The Theory of Everything (2014), Anomalisa (2015)) discover that several photographs of premonitions of people’s deaths and mysterious omens. Katherine suspects something is wrong, which has to do with Damien, but she later discovers that she is pregnant and persists in getting an abortion because she does not want to have another child like Damien. What Damien did next shocked me because I did not expect him to do that to his mother.
The movie contains a few creepy visuals, a strong cast, a well-engineered, intense story that unfold itself, a fast-moving/pace, fabulous makeup, and beautiful camera work. I enjoyed the movie, but I was left wondering many thoughts, with one being, what was the point? Overall, the film was a great watch that I would recommend to horror fans. The Omen was a cliche to several/many other movies, but it had enough meat to stand out from the rest.
