A Cure for Wellness (2016) shocked audiences with its ending. Our spoiler-free review explains the scares, themes, and what makes this film unforgettable.
A Cure for Wellness (2016) is a 146 min psychological mystery horror thriller film that was shot in Baden-Württemberg, Germany; Brandenburg, Germany and Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), Rango (2011)) has brought us another incredible feature. I admire Gore Verbinski for exploring one thing that we cannot escape, and that is our mortality, and he explored it in such a grand way which made it into an epic horror movie that feels like something we have not seen before. The film contains s**ual content, graphic nudity, disturbing violence, bad language, suspense, s**ual violence, s**ual assault, therapeutic institute, darkness, blood, and supernatural.
A Cure for Wellness revolves around young executive Lockhart (Dane DeHaan - Chronicle (2012), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Lawless (2012), Kill Your Darlings (2013)) who was sent to retrieve someone from a mysterious rehabilitation center in the Swiss Alps, Switzerland. Lockhart works for a financial trading company, and he was ordered to get Pembroke who went into seclusion after visiting the rehabilitation center/wellness center in the mountains. Pembroke (Harry Groener - About Schmidt (2002), Dear John (1988-1991), Road to Perdition (2002), Patch Adams (1998)) is one of the head persons for the financial company.
The Wellness Center is recognized for its water healing powers, and a lot of old, wealthy executives goes there after they have reached the limit with their careers and decided to spend the rest of their days in the center. Little that do the old businessmen know, their days at the center is numbered. Lockhart tried his best to convince Pembroke to go back to the States with him but Pembroke refuses, and Lockhart attempts to leave the facility, but as we all know, once you enter, you cannot leave.
I must admit that I did not know what was going on sometimes as I was totally lost. I did not like the second act because it was boring for about 20 minutes while we see Lockhart trying to get a hold on it and needless to say there was no progression of the story, so the "filler" was not needed. The last thirty minutes or so is worth it for those who might be running out of patience while viewing this film, sit tight and wait for the ending because you will be amazed. Viewers will be treated to an exceptional insanity ride during the third act as it is truly amazing. A Cure for Wellness was a bit overwhelming at times, but this movie was more than I ever imagined it to be and is something that I would love to revisit before 2018.
