The Void (2016) 1h 30min Canadian horror movie that was shot in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada that does not contain much comedy. Directors and writers Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski both have worked together on Manborg (2011) and Father’s Day (2011) and once again joined to bring us The Void which was an average movie. The duo works well together and makes an honest creature film. The Void will remind you of John Carpenter’s 1980’s movie, The Thing (1982) because it is filled with constant tension and the build up was well done. The Void, unfortunately, does not have significant jump scares that will make you shiver or jump out of your seat, but it might make viewers blood pressure rise a little. The movie contains monsters, suspense, madmen, mutilation, and tension.
Officer Daniel Carter (Aaron Poole - The Conspiracy (2012), This Beautiful City (2007), The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh (2012), The Captive (2014)) picked up a man covered in blood stumbling on a back road and took to the hospital. The four-person staffed hospital soon faces danger as a few men armed with shotguns comes looking for the blood covered man found on the road while a group of cloaked covered people with large knives circle the building. The nightmarish creatures developing inside the building was intriguing, gruesome, and surprising as humans began morphing into monsters. It was a spectacular treat as their bodies shift/pop, foul fluids ooze and other things that I will not mention.
I was impressed by the creatures and that the movie paid homage to classics like Prince of Darkness (1987), The Thing (1982), Hellraiser (1987) and many others. I felt as though that the creatures were amazingly well done and they kind of overpowered everything else. All of the actors gave us decent acting, and the storyline was followable. The visual effects were outstanding and will shock and horrify viewers. One again, Steven Kostanski has outdone himself with the practical effects as his designs were indescribably horrifying. Horror fans should see this film when available in their area.
