Our honest review of Candyman (1992) breaks down its scares, pacing, and whether this horror movie truly stands the test of time.

Candyman (1992) is directed by Bernard Rose with horror icon Tony Todd playing Candyman. Candyman was filmed with an estimated movie budget of $6 million and grossed $25.7 at the box office. Candyman received 5 movie awards and 7 nominations.

Candyman is about Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) who is a student who decides to write a thesis about local legends and myths. She visits a part of the town, where she learns about the legend of the Candyman, a man who has a hook shoved in his bloody stump where his hand was cut off. He supposedly appears behind you breathing down your neck after you say his name five times in front of a mirror, ready to gut you from groin to gullet. Of course, Helen doesn’t believe all this stuff, but the people of the area are terrified of Candyman. When she ignores their warnings and begins her investigation in the places that he is rumored to appear, a series of horrible murders begins. Clive Barker did Hellraiser (1987) and Nightbreed (1990), both pretty good movies, but then there is Candyman. It’s a pretty good plot, and I liked the overall movie, but it just so slow at times. Pacing lives up to the thriller genre but seems too boring at times.

Candyman has a pretty good plot, and I liked the overall movie, but it just wasn’t very exciting and didn’t hold my interest too well. It took forever for Candyman to even appear it seemed, and it just did not make me very happy with the film. When Candyman did appear, he stole the show, but it was too sparingly and hurt the rating of the movie.
