Christine (1983) is an American horror film that was shot in several locations in California, USA and is based on the Stephen King 1983 novel of the same name. Director John Carpenter (Halloween (1978), Escape from L.A. (1996), Escape from New York (1981), They Live (1988)) flourished at directing this incredibly beautiful movie. Christine is an excellent film but is not the best film that Stephen King has written or that John Carpenter directed. You can see that John tries to include his audience in the actions with his subjective camerawork, but I did not feel as though I was going along the same journey as the protagonist and did not feel much emotions towards the film.
Christine takes place in 1978 where a vintage Plymouth Fury car name Christine has an effect on its owner who is a teenager. The 1958 Plymouth Fury car was bought at a junkyard and as you can guess has a mind of its own as it became one dangerous, jealous and murderous vehicle that appears to be possessed by a demonic entity that seeks vengeance.
Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon - A Midnight Clear (1992), The Singing Detective (2003), Waking the Dead (2000), Mother Night (1996)) is not a popular kid as he is awkward. His only friend is Dennis Guilder (John Stockwell - Blue Crush (2002), Top Gun (1986), Into the Blue (2005), Turistas (2006)) but that is not for long. Arnie bought a used 1958 Plymouth Fury red-and-white whose nickname is Christine and needed major work to restore it. Arnie began changing the way he looks and carries himself as he spends more and more time restoring Christine. He started dressing differently, stopped wearing his glasses and became arrogant amongst other traits that I did not like. Arnie’s friend, Leigh Cabot (Alexandra Paul - Baywatch (1992-1997), Dragnet (1987), 8 Million Ways to Die (1986)) discovered that Christine’s previous owner was obsessed with the car and died from carbon monoxide poisoning. What happens next is for you to find out in this 1980s movie.
I enjoyed the special effects as they were done nicely and it made me remember the Transformers because the car, Christine can restore itself from a rusty piece of metal to one beautiful piece of work. Thrill-seekers will not be disappointed as there is enough suspense, thrills, shocks and shivers to keep you on your toes throughout the film. I enjoyed watching this movie growing up as it was spectacular in the 1980s but I do not have the same experience now.
