Our honest review of Darling (2015) breaks down its scares, pacing, and whether this horror movie truly stands the test of time.
Darling (2015) is an Indian Tamil horror comedy that is a remake of the Telugu film Prema Katha Chitram (2013) by first-time director Sam Anton. Sam did a phenomenal job executing his first movie, and I cannot wait to see him direct more movies. Sam did a fantastic job with the setting of the film and making the entire film better than the original because it is an entertaining movie that has comedy throughout. Darling is the first Tamil film that I know of in Tamil History to have an English title. Darling contains comedy with thick and fast jokes that many might not understand, great storyline, suspense, thrills, sitting on the edge of your seat moments, horror and possession.
I did not like the concept of Darling, which revolves around a few people that wish to commit suicide together. Supernatural forces intervened with their plans and well you have to watch the movie to see what happened. Kathir (G.V. Prakash Kumar - Thalaivaa (2013), Raja Rani (2013), Kaakkaa Muttai (2014), Thaandavam (2012)), Nisha and Kumaran wishes to commit suicide. Nisha (Nikki Galrani - 1983 (2014), Vellimoonga (2014), Yagavarayinum Naa Kakka (2015)), Kathir and Kumaran feel that they do not deserve to live because they are failures. The trio desires to fulfill their last wishes before dying. Skip forward, they met Athisaya Raj (Karunas - Enthiran (2010), The Unbeatable (2009), Pithamagan (2003), Kattradhu Thamizh (2007)) who wants to end his life also. The four of them venture to a farmhouse where they decide to end their lives three days later because Nisha is in love with Kathir and does not want him to end his life.
The story/movie sounds blah so far, but it gets interesting as a spirit possesses Nisha leading her to speak unmannerly to the others. They soon discover that Nisha is possessed and tries to help her by calling Ghost Gopal Varma (Rajendran - Naan Kadavul (2009), Velayudham (2011), Pithamagan (2003), Raja Rani (2013)) who is an exorcist. What happens next and the backstory we see/hear is disturbing and sad. Darling was an entertaining comedy horror flick that has flaws, but the horror aspect was done perfectly although there were not many thrills to send chills down your spine. All of the actors gave an incredible performance which helped the film a great deal. Overall, I would recommend all horror fans who do not mind reading subtitles to watch this movie because it receives my vote. Horror fans who will read too deep into the film should stay away from this one because it will disappoint.
