Dreadtime Stories (2014) is an American low budget (about $2,000) thriller horror movie that is 105 minutes and was filmed in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. It is an anthology movie that is comprised of nine segments that evolve to one story. It is from the Independent Texas Production House of STX Media. Director, editor, cinematographer, and co-writer Jacob Grim did an excellent job executing his first full-length anthology movie. I usually do not enjoy anthologies, but I will watch this movie again because it is original and not a cliche of the same old stories we watch. Nothing was overdone in the movie, and there was the right amount of gore, scares, thrills, suspense, sitting on the edge of your moments, monsters, supernatural creatures.
Some of the creatures were werewolves, killer clowns, scarecrows and non-creatures were cannibals and murderers. The visual effects and cinematography was very impressive. The acting was okay at the time and could have been better.
The movie is a combination of nine segments, so I wrote a little about each segment to not make it confusing.
Home Cooking
This segment is not your usual scene. I love cooking shows and I was instantly reeled into Home Cooking and then, bam, I was scared out of my boots because I forgot I was watching a cooking show in a horror movie as I was looking at the recipe. The scares took a while, but it was worth it.
Forgotten
This segment is about an angry jerk of a boss that is extremely aggressive and needless to say it ends gory.
Harvest Hollow
The scarecrow was a piece of crap and made this segment a little less than what it could have been. The Scarecrow was not scary one bit, and the costume looked like a child did it - it did not help that this segment took place in the daytime and, therefore, did not help with the scare factor.
Useless
This segment suits it title in so many ways as it was boring to watch, and I could not wait to see the next segment if I could have skip forward then I would have. The actors in this segment did a great job with their parts; it was just the script for this segment was daunting.
Wits End
This segment revolves around a date night with horror slasher films and a twisted twist at the end. I enjoyed this segment immensely and wished there was more.
Stained Affection
This is a stalker and slasher segment where we have a killer that is obsessed with his victim and has a gruesome death scene. In the bathroom.
Punishment
This segment revolves around a mob, and I think you pretty much can guess how this segment turns out to be- insane killings with lots of cigars.
Empty
I like this segment because it made me remember stories I have heard growing up. It is about an urban legend where a ghost girl stands on the side of the road waiting for drivers to pick her up. It was an excellent segment that would make you think thoughts when driving alone in the dark.
Distention
This segment touched me, and I was sad throughout it. It is about witchcraft and a pregnant female who turns to the women shelter for battered women.
I recommend everyone to watch Dreadtime Stories when you can, and you will not be disappointed.
